Apocalypse Of The Dead | Demo 2007

Archaic Magazine

Here we have a Dutch band with their three-song demo record titled "Apocalypse of the Dead". This is the second demo in their career after the "Burning Hatred" demo from 2005. An interesting fact in Burning Hatred 's line up is the name of Arnold Oudemiddendorp (I will have problems pronouncing his last name for sure) who has been part of the Dutch Death Metal pride Altar (in recent news Arnold isn't anymore part of the band and Burning Hatred are looking for a replacement). So having that in mind what does this band has to offer then?

Burning Hatred strike with three pieces of oldschool Death Metal in the vein of old classics like Grave, Dismember or the earlier works of Entombed. "Silenced" starts off with an admirable mix of melody and aggression, "Hate Feelings" follows sounding like a classic Grave song ("You'll Never See"- era) and the fatal end comes with "Sheep Among Wolves" which is a considerable closing track.

These guys aren't newbies in the scene and know pretty well what are they doing and how to make heavy yet groovy and memorable music, something not so common in the extreme music of today. The good potential of Burning Hatred is obvious in this demo recording and hopefully the band will find soon a proper label to work with!

It can't all be inventive and Dutch deathers Burning Hatred is proof of this. The band don't try any new tricks on their demo Apocalypse of the Dead, but that doesn't make the music less appealing. The Dutchmen are enthused by Swedish acts such as Dismember and Grave, but also Bolt Thrower have been an inspiration. It's noticeable, but not in a way that make the band seem like a clone.

The music is varied and to some degree also fairly catchy. It doesn't hurt the music either that the band is approaching things from a more mid-tempo kind of viewpoint. It may not make the music more original sounding, but it does help create a bit of identity. Regardless of relying on many ideas already tried Burning Hatred has made a demo that is worth checking out.

HUB & HEUY FEST 5 | BOSUIL - WEERT | 26-JANUARY-2008 (Nl) | Archaic Magazine

Second band up was the first of the mini-tour package, Dutch old school death metal act Burning Hatred. This weekend was their first with new vocalist Koen (Donderbaard), to some of the Dutch readers perhaps also known from Thronar. As you may have noticed when reading Zvetan’s review of their ‘Apocalypse Of The Dead” demo, the band fits in very well with the Dismember package. The band kicked of with I believe ‘Controlled’ (but I am not so much of a death metal expert, that is my buddy martin who had to stay home sick this day), and the first thing to notice was the difference in stage presentation compared to Belgian Valkyre. Meanwhile the audience had increased to like 40 people, and I think their stage presentation jst drew those extra people to the stage. The show was continued with songs like ‘Streams of Blood’ and ‘Vortex of Lies’, also from the 2005 demo. What about their new demo”Apocalypse of the Dead” from 2007, of which Zvetan wrote? Well, those came afterwards, when the band played ‘Silenced’ and ‘Hate Feelings’.

In between the band took some longer breaks, which put the sting a bit out of the show, but I think that with new vocalist Koen and his stage presentation the band still has possibilities left, and that they can becoming one of the band’s that uphold the reputation of the Netherlands in the field of death metal. The set kicked off in fury, but starting with ‘Vortex of Lies’ the band managed to mix in some crunchy elements, which makes it also more enjoyable for non death metal addicts like me. I don’t know the title of the last song, but it had a great, a bit Amon Amarth like, groove. Nice show, musicalwise perhaps not much better than Valkyre, but beating them in stage presentation…
